Understanding Ideal Body Weight

Ideal Body Weight (IBW) was originally developed to estimate dosages for medical use, not to determine how a person should look. The formulas are based on height and gender, but don't account for muscle mass, body composition, or individual variations.

IBW Formulas

Hamwi (1964)

Invented for medicinal dosage purposes

Male: 48kg + 2.7kg per inch over 5 feet
Female: 45.5kg + 2.2kg per inch over 5 feet

Devine (1974)

Most widely used formula for IBW measurement

Male: 50kg + 2.3kg per inch over 5 feet
Female: 45.5kg + 2.3kg per inch over 5 feet

Robinson (1983)

Modification of the Devine Formula

Male: 52kg + 1.9kg per inch over 5 feet
Female: 49kg + 1.7kg per inch over 5 feet

Miller (1983)

Modification of the Devine Formula

Male: 56.2kg + 1.41kg per inch over 5 feet
Female: 53.1kg + 1.36kg per inch over 5 feet

Factors Affecting Ideal Weight

Body Frame Size

Determined by wrist circumference relative to height. Larger frames can support more weight healthily.

Muscle Mass

Muscle weighs more than fat. Athletes may exceed IBW while being very healthy.

Age

Height decreases with age, and muscle mass naturally declines, affecting ideal weight.

Gender

Males typically have more muscle mass and bone density, resulting in higher ideal weights.

BMI vs IBW

Ideal Body Weight (IBW)

  • Based on height and gender only
  • Originally for medical dosing
  • Multiple formulas available
  • Doesn't consider body composition

Body Mass Index (BMI)

  • Based on height and weight
  • WHO standard for health assessment
  • Range: 18.5-25 (healthy)
  • More widely used in healthcare

Important Disclaimer: IBW calculations are estimates based on statistical formulas. They don't account for individual factors like muscle mass, body composition, fitness level, or health conditions. Focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and adequate sleep rather than chasing a specific weight number. Always consult with healthcare professionals for personalized guidance.
