Understanding Your Menstrual Cycle
The menstrual cycle is a natural process that prepares your body for potential pregnancy. It typically lasts 28 days but can vary from 21 to 35 days. Understanding your cycle helps you track fertility, plan activities, and monitor your reproductive health.
Cycle Phases
Menstrual Phase (Days 1-5)
Your period occurs. The uterine lining sheds, and bleeding lasts 2-7 days on average.
Follicular Phase (Days 6-14)
Your body prepares for ovulation. Follicles develop in the ovaries, and estrogen levels rise.
Ovulation (Day 14)
An egg is released from the ovary. This is your most fertile time for conception.
Luteal Phase (Days 15-28)
After ovulation, your body prepares for pregnancy. If no fertilization occurs, the cycle restarts.
Fertility and Conception
- Fertile Window: 5 days before ovulation + 1 day after (about 6 days total)
- Peak Fertility: 1-2 days before ovulation
- Ovulation Signs: Increased cervical mucus, slight temperature rise, mild cramping
- Conception: Sperm can live up to 5 days in the reproductive tract
