Understanding Pregnancy Calculation
Pregnancy typically lasts about 40 weeks from the first day of your last menstrual period, or 38 weeks from conception. However, only about 4% of babies are born on their exact due date, with 60% born within a week and 90% within two weeks of the due date.
Calculation Methods
Last Menstrual Period (LMP)
Most common method. Due date = LMP + 280 days (40 weeks). Assumes 28-day cycle with ovulation on day 14.
Ultrasound Dating
Most accurate method, especially in first trimester. Measures fetal size to determine gestational age.
Conception Date
Due date = Conception + 266 days (38 weeks). Most accurate if you know exact conception date.
IVF Transfer
Due date = Transfer date + 266 days - embryo age. Accounts for different embryo development stages.
